Only in darkness does light begin to find its true meaning. Light and darkness are not just coexistence but co-dependent. One defines the other, giving it form, meaning, and relevance. Embracing this duality is not about resigning to the darkness but about understanding its role in enhancing the light.

Highs and lows, joys and sorrows, beauty and pain, love and sadness… darkness is not a void but a canvas and it’s up to us to bring forth the light and dance with both of them.

I created this piece to represent the presence of both light and darkness and how one can’t exist without the other.

I found that not only is this conceptually true, but quite literally in the act of painting you can’t create light without first having something darker. There’s something poetic about that. Art reflecting life and vise versa.

The autumnal equinox happened while I was painting this as well, which was another beautiful representation of equal parts light and darkness.

I like how the simplicity of two panels of color can represent a complex concept, experience, and emotion.
